Airbags need more than just air

CUSHY LIFESAVERS

Airbags have become second nature in the automotive industry. These lifesaving “sacks of air” do not actually use air, however, but rather gas mixtures blown into the airbag from a gas generator in just a few milliseconds. To achieve such high deployment speeds, the gas generator has a pressure reservoir filled with a gas mixture at pressures ranging from 200 to 500 bar. That mixture consists of helium, argon and oxygen.

O2

OXYGEN (O2): TENDENCY TO BOND

Ar

ARGON (Ar): INERTNESS AS A STRENGTH
